If you have an email address that ends in @comcast.net or @xfinity.com, you’ve probably seen notices that your email is being moved to Yahoo. This is happening to every Comcast email customer, and the deadline is December 31, 2026.

Here’s what you need to know.

What’s actually happening

Comcast is no longer going to host email. They’ve partnered with Yahoo to take over all Xfinity email accounts. Your email address stays the same, but the system behind it changes.

For most people, this means your email will stop working in the Apple Mail app, Outlook, or whatever program you currently use to read email. You’ll need to either switch to reading your email through a web browser (Yahoo Mail) or reconfigure your email app with new settings.

What you should do now

If your email is still working normally, you don’t need to panic. But you should start preparing:

  1. Make sure you know your Comcast/Xfinity email password. If you don’t, reset it now while the old system still works.
  2. Think about whether this is a good time to switch to Gmail or iCloud Mail. If you’ve been meaning to make a change, this is a natural point to do it.
  3. Keep an eye out for emails from Comcast about your specific migration date.

If your email has already stopped working, the migration may have already happened for your account. You’ll need to set up Yahoo Mail access.

Should you switch to Gmail or iCloud instead?

This is what many of our clients are doing. Rather than move to Yahoo, they use this as an opportunity to switch to a more modern email provider. Gmail and iCloud Mail are both free, reliable, and work well on iPhones and Macs.

The tradeoff is that you’ll need to update your email address with contacts, banks, doctors, and other services. We help clients through this process regularly.
